Rice County Journal, 1882
- Etienne Benjamin, of the town of Erin, brother of the late Joseph Benjamin, of Faribault, while returning home from the city on Friday last, in company with Mrs. Wm. Cody, F. Benjamin, Jr. and Peter Bedford, was accidentally thrown from the wagon, when north of Shieldville lake, and so badly injured that he died on Monday, May 22, at 4 o'clock p.m. In falling he struck upon his back and shoulders, injuring his spine, causing paralysis. Deceased has been a resident of Minnesota since 1856; was a brave and faithful soldier during the late war and one of Rice county's most respected citizens. He was sixty-four years old. He was born in 1818 in St. Mathias-sur Richelieu, Quebec. His parents were Jean Baptiste Benjamin dit St. Aubin and Charlotte Stanislaus Jacques.
I have been told that Stephen is the translation of Etienne to English. His brother, Joseph, is mentioned in the obituary, as well as his nephew, Flavien Benjamin, Jr. He is the brother of Flavien Benjamin, Sr. mentioned in other places in your database. There were several other siblings who stayed in Canada. Etienne married Justine Bazinet on 1 Feb 1842 at Mont St. Gregoire, Quebec. Three daughters were born in Canada, Justine (who married Xavier Lapierre a.k.a. Oliver Stone) and Marie Celine who married John DOW Morrison (my 2nd great grandfather). Marie Celine moved to St. Paul, Ramsey County, MN. They had one son, Francis Felix Morrison. Etienne and Justine had 7 or 8 children (Justine, Marie Celine, Louisa (1850 - Canada) Catharine (1855 - Illinois), Edmile or Etienne, Jr, John, Asylda, Louise (1868), Alma, and Alvria. It is interesting to note that Asylda married Edward Remillard and Alma married John Stassen, the uncle of Harold Stassen (MN governor) and John Benjamin married Mary Louse Caron. I have not found any other information for Louisa, Edmile or Etienne Jr, Louise, or Alvria. Etienne's wife, Justine, died on 2 Feb 1892 in Rice County. I have not found her burial information. John Benjamin, son of Etienne and Justine, inherited the farm and eventually sold it to Flavien Benjamin, Jr.
