Lombardy, Italy

Alpine Italy
Description of image

In the late 1800's, the last of our Italian-born family were coming up in the neighboring towns of Tresivio and Sondrio. The area is situated in the picturesque Valtellina, an alpine valley with access to neighboring Switzerland. The valley has been an area of strategic importance from ancient time to the second world war. Unlike the ancestral lands of Sicily, where most Italian-Americans hail from, Lombardy is the wealthiest region of Italy. Milan is one of the wealthiest cosmopolitan cities in Europe and is the economic powerhouse of Italy. The cultures of Alpine Italy and Southern Italy are quite distinct, owing largely to their differences in climate. Much like in the US, the south of Italy has long been largely agricultural, placing more emphasis on leisure and family time where northerners are more focused on education and economic endeavors.
